Madre Terra was initiated 5th November 1944 with the implementation of the Agrarian Reform (Gullo-Segni law) which stated that lands left uncultivated by their landowners had to be distributed to peasants’ cooperatives. Today 300 partner farmers, operating 1200 hectares, cultivate the native varieties: Cerasuola, Biancolilla and Nocellara. The Madre Terra Mill is located in Sciacca, a town on the south coast of the Agrigento region, where farmers cultivate olive groves of the native varieties Cerasuola, Biancolilla and Nocellara del Belice.
The Cerasuola olive oil has a high concentration of polyphenols (430) and a high composition in oleic acid (76%). This medium-low intensity scale taste is a mix of fruity, spicy and bitter. With a blend of primary aromas of olive leaf and tomato, with secondary tones of artichoke, grass and green almond. This mono-cultivar olive oil is celebrated for it's distinctive qualities and is available as a stand alone oil choice.
The Biancolilla olive oil has a medium-high concentration of polyphenols (330) and an average composition in oleic acid (71%). This medium-low intensity scale taste is a balance of fruity, moderately spicy and medium-low bitterness. The primary aromas of fresh grass is followed with mild tones of artichoke, tomatoes and green almond. This mono-cultivar olive oil is enjoyed for it's lighter qualities and is available as a stand alone oil choice.
In the Sciacca region, farmers told us that there is benefit to be had by blending the three types of regional olive types. Madre Terre has taken time to develop a balanced blend of Cultivars as 70% Cerasuola, 20% Biancolilla and 10% Nocellara. The result are flavors of chicory, artichoke, thistle and light medicinal scents. and a balance of bitter and spicy of medium intensity tastes with a medium fruity pallet.
